Philippe Starck: An Icon of Contemporary Design
This inspiring blog would not be complete without dedicating at least one text to our favorite designer Philippe Starck, a versatile genius whose works, objects, and furniture are our eternal inspiration.
Philippe Starck, born in Paris in 1949, is one of the most renowned and influential designers of our time. The son of a French aeronautical engineer and inventor, this background may have shaped his unique approach to design. His passion for creation and innovation was evident from an early age. He studied interior architecture and design at the École Nissim de Camondo in Paris and began his career in 1976 by founding the company "Starck Product." His career started with furniture design, but he soon expanded his portfolio to include interiors, industrial design, and even architecture.
Design and Collaborations with Renowned Companies
One of the most important aspects of Starck's career is his collaboration with many renowned companies for the production of furniture, sanitary ware, and kitchen items. His collaborations with Kartell, Alessi, Driade, and Duravit have resulted in some of the most famous and beloved iconic pieces of furniture and household items in contemporary design.
Kartell: Starck's collaboration with the Italian company Kartell, known for its innovative plastic products, has produced a number of iconic pieces. The most famous among them is the Louis Ghost chair, made of transparent polycarbonate, which has become a symbol of contemporary design. This chair combines the classical lines of baroque style with modern materials, creating a visually appealing and functional piece of furniture. There is also the extremely popular Master stool, produced today from 95% recycled material.
Alessi: With Alessi, known for its high-quality kitchen and dining products, Starck has created numerous innovative and aesthetically pleasing items. One of the most famous is the Juicy Salif citrus squeezer, which with its sculptural form and functionality, represents a perfect example of the designer's blend of art and practicality.
Driade: Collaboration with Driade has brought a range of innovative furniture pieces that stand out for their elegance and functionality. Starck's work with Driade includes chairs, tables, and other interior items, recognizable for their clean lines and high-quality materials. Regarding the genius Lou Speak armchair, Philippe said: “Sit on a Lou Speak and you are forced to rise the level of quality of your conversation. If you don’t, your armchair will be more elegant than you.”
Duravit: In collaboration with Duravit, a leading company for sanitary equipment, Starck designed a range of bathroom elements that combine aesthetic appeal with functionality. His Starck 1 collection for Duravit has become synonymous with luxurious and elegant bathroom spaces. In 1994, he designed the renowned Starck 1 unique washbasin with a wooden cabinet underneath in a conical shape, which became a true design classic. In 2024, he redesigned the same model to mark the 30th anniversary of the Starck Barrel, giving it an even more elegant note and integrating it with modern technology.
Iconic Items and Innovative Design
Philippe Starck is known for creating items that are both innovative and aesthetically appealing. His work spans a wide range of objects, from furniture and lighting to kitchen utensils and industrial design.
Chairs and Tables: Chairs and tables designed by Starck have become iconic pieces of contemporary design. Along with Louis Ghost, some of the most well-known chairs include the Masters Chair, which combines the designs of three classic chairs, and the Bubble Club Chair, the first plastic chair intended for outdoor use.
Lighting: Starck's work in the field of lighting is also significant. His lamps and chandeliers are often characterized by classical shapes in a modern guise and the use of contemporary materials. Lamps like Miss K and Ara for Flos have become favorite pieces among design enthusiasts. For luxurious modern spaces, Starck's KHAN chandelier from Kartell, inspired by 18th-century crystal chandeliers, or one of the lamps from the BON JOUR VERSAILLES DICHROÏQUE series (BACCARAT), is often chosen.
Kitchen Items: In addition to Juicy Salif, Starck has designed numerous other kitchen items that have become iconic. His products for Alessi, including kettles, cutlery, and cookware, combine functionality with elegant design.
Interiors and Architecture
Starck's contribution to interior design and architecture is also very distinctive. His numerous ingenious projects in interior design encompass boutique hotels, private residences, restaurants, and public spaces.
Hotels: Philippe Starck is a pioneer in the design of boutique hotels. His work on the Delano Hotel in Miami, which opened in 1995, set new standards in hotel design, combining luxury, comfort, and a unique aesthetic impression. Other well-known hotels he designed include Hudson Hotel in New York, Le Meurice and Le Royal Monceau in Paris, and Mondrian in Los Angeles.
Public Buildings: Starck has also worked on the design of numerous public buildings, including museums, theaters, and other cultural institutions. His work on the interiors of these spaces is characterized by innovative approaches to space and function, as well as his always characteristic twist.
Private Residences: Starck's work on private residences includes numerous luxurious houses and apartments worldwide, from Paris and London to the USA, the Bahamas, and Japan. His design combines contemporary elements with classic styles, creating spaces that are both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, following contemporary trends, he increasingly uses sustainable and recycled materials. Starck himself owns several residences, such as a glass house in Portugal, an oyster farm in southwestern France, a house on the island of Capri, in Formentera (Ibiza's southern sister), and in Burano near Venice.

One of the more interesting projects in Starck's career was a collaboration with Kartell and Mattel this year. A redesign of Starck's iconic 5 chairs - Eros, Masters, Louis Ghost, Venice, and AI - was created. Each chair was made in its original proportions as well as in a version reduced to doll size to mark Barbie's 65th anniversary, a toy invented by Ruth Handler in 1959. All the furniture was painted in Pantone 219 C, the recognizable Barbie pink shade, and made from recycled plastic, according to Kartell. These interesting chairs were exhibited at this year's Milan Design Week and attracted exceptional interest.
